Virtual Field Trip to Colombia for Spanish Class

Have you ever taken your students on a virtual field trip before? It’s such a fun way to start a unit by introducing them to a country with a virtual tour! Here’s how you can take your students on a virtual field trip to Colombia!

Note: This is a guest post from Ashley at Srta. Spanish, sharing how she does virtual field trips!

What is a virtual field trip?

A virtual field trip is a digital, interactive experience that allows students the chance to explore and learn about different locations around the world without physically leaving the classroom.

There are many different tools to create a virtual field trip, but my personal favorite is using Google My Maps to embed readings, images, and videos around an interactive Google Map.

Here are the basics to creating a virtual field trip:

  • Choose your tool
  • Choose your destination
  • Gather media
  • Create the file in your tool of choice
  • Optional: Create your handout(s)
  • Optional: Plan a fast finisher or follow up activity.
  • Share and assign the virtual field trip

You can learn more about how to create your own virtual field trip in my blog post here!

How do you use a virtual field trip?

I like to use a similar lesson plan every time I use a virtual field trip. Here’s what it looks like:

  • Start of class routine (5-8 minutes)
  • Daily routine (8-10 minutes)
  • Explore the map (5-10 minutes)
  • Pass out handouts
  • Students complete virtual field trip, then choose from the fast finishers available

After students have taken some time to explore the map, pass out the comprehension questions, graphic organizer, or both

Students can click around and explore to find the information and complete the handouts on their own.

After they finish the handout and turn it in, they can choose from the fast finishers you prefer. Some of my favorite fast finishers for virtual field trip days include:
